A 26-year-old man was killed and an Ontario Provincial Police officer was hospitalized with serious injuries after an incident in Orillia on Thursday afternoon.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit said in a statement that it was investigating an officer-involved shooting on Cochrane St. in Orillia.

The SIU said the OPP’s Central Region detachment responded before that to a disturbance at a residence on Barrie Rd. in Orillia at about 2 p.m. Officers then located a man believed to be involved in the incident in the Cochrane-Matchedash St. S. area.

The man had an edged weapon, the SIU said, and an officer was stabbed.

“The officer discharged his firearm,” the SIU said. “At some point, another officer discharged a conducted energy weapon.

“The man was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.”

The OPP’s Central Region detachment issued a public safety alert at about the same time as the incident, asking pedestrians and drivers to stay away from Cochrane between Matchedash and West St. S.

“The OPP will not be providing any further information,” the detachment’s social media account posted on X, referring any questions to the SIU.

The Ontario Provincial Police Association said in a statement that the officer was in stable condition at a hospital.

“We are keeping all first responders and everyone impacted by this situation today in our thoughts,” the statement on X said.

The SIU said five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case with a post-mortem for the deceased scheduled for Friday.
