A man has been charged with murder after a woman’s body was discovered with stab wounds in the backyard of her Werribee home.

Emergency services were called to the Retford Close address just after 9am on Thursday by a man known to her.

Neighbours said they heard a woman’s piercing screams and saw a man in blood-soaked clothing before her body was found.

Officers arrested a 32-year-old man, believed to be the woman’s former partner, at the scene.

Police said in a statement on Thursday night the man had been charged with murder and would appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Neighbours said they saw him outside the front of the house in what appeared to be blood-stained clothing.

“It was just awful,” said one neighbour, who asked not to be named because of the nature of the incident.

Residents said the man often came and went from the address, and that a number of children lived there with their mother, the eldest of whom was in high school.

One neighbour, who did not want to be identified, said: “How someone could do this to another person is beyond me”.
