Netflix has announced the date for the final season of its hit Squid Game, released a sneak peek of season five of Stranger Things, and announced the cast of its adaptation of Jane Harper’s Tasmanian-set murder mystery The Survivors.

At its Next on Netflix event in Los Angeles on Thursday, the streamer said season three of Squid Game would premiere on June 27, only six months after season two of the South Korean hit was released on Boxing Day and three years after the series was first released.

The streamer, which announced a slew of new and returning shows, also offered first-look images for anticipated films, including Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, which stars Australian actor Jacob Elordi as the titular monster. In a pre-recorded message, Del Toro said the film, which will be released in November, “doesn’t get more personal than this”.

Australian Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power star Charlie Vickers headlines The Survivors with new Bridgerton star Yerin Ha and Kiwi actor Robyn Malcolm. Shot in Tasmania last year, and developed by Tony Ayres Productions, the mystery explores unresolved grief when a young man returns to a seaside town 15 years after the death of his brother and the disappearance of a young woman.

A sneak peek of Melbourne comedy Son of a Donkey was also revealed. Created by and starring Sydney brothers Theo and Nathan Saidden, the six-episode standalone series is a spin-off of their comedy Superwog, a 2018 YouTube hit that also screened on the ABC.

In Son of a Donkey, Superwog (played by Theo) “moves out of his home to claim his independence – until he’s faced with the harsh realities of adulthood”. With his best mate Johnny (played by Nathan) they “get up to their usual antics as they come to terms with what’s most important: family”.

A clip of the long-awaited fifth season of Stranger Things was included in Netflix’s teaser reel, revealing that Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) goes missing, but no release date was revealed.
