Windsor Police have temporarily closed a section of busy Walker Road in Windsor due to a serious crash on Monday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Windsor Police Service called the incident a “serious collision with injuries” in an emailed statement to The Star.

Police posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, shortly before 3 p.m. that they had closed a section of Walker Road from Wyandotte Street East to Ottawa Street for “an extended period due to a collision.”

As of approximately 5:30 p.m., the area remained cordoned off for an investigation, according to the spokesperson for Windsor Police.

A red minivan with visible exterior damage and a broken windshield could be seen beyond the caution tape blocking pedestrian access near the intersection at Walker Road and Edna Street.

While working at a nearby auto repair shop, Younis Hammoud and Joe Piach told the Star that they were alerted to the incident when they heard a loud crash.

“We ran out because we hear an accident every other week,” said Piach, a certified technician at Plump Autoshop.

“We saw people freaking out, and noticed that it was a severe situation.”

Hammoud and Piach said they believed some pedestrians had been struck about a block away.

The pair said they found a woman trapped inside the overturned minivan. When their first attempt to flip the vehicle upright failed, they brought ladders from the auto shop, climbed onto the vehicle, and with help from other bystanders, successfully pulled the woman out through the driver’s door.

“The ladder just gave us the height to pull the door up,” said Hammoud, owner of Convenient Perfection Detailing & Auto Repairs.

“Then I reached down, unlocked the seat belt, and pulled her straight out.”

Piach told the Star that he would like to see more measures taken to improve safety for pedestrians and vehicles on Walker Road. He said collisions happen frequently in the area.

“There are massive complaints from the businesses on this street,” said Piach.

“I’ve never felt safe walking across this road. There’s a high school two blocks away. So that should make them do something. They just redid the road and turned it into a highway. Everyone’s doing 80.”

Windsor Police said they would notify the community when the road reopens.

More to come.
